One difference worth knowing. Most of the image tools here never send your file anywhere. This one has to — rebuilding the background behind a removed object needs a model that cannot run in a browser. Your photo goes to a processing provider, is used for that one job, and is not stored by us afterwards. If you would rather nothing left your device, the cropper and the other browser tools are unaffected.
Frequently asked questions
How do I choose what gets removed?
Paint over it. Whatever you mark is erased and the background is rebuilt behind it — so mark the whole object, including its shadow, or the shadow stays behind as a giveaway.
Can I remove a person from a photo?
Yes, and it is the most common use. Someone standing against a busy background is harder than someone against sky or a plain wall, because there is more for the model to invent convincingly.
What if I mark the wrong thing?
Undo takes back the last stroke and Clear starts the marking over. Nothing runs until you press the button, so a mistake costs you nothing.
Is there a way to do this without a mouse?
Yes. Under the brush there is a panel that takes a rectangle as four numbers — left, top, width, height — and marks it. It is also the precise option when the thing you are erasing is already a neat rectangle.
Is my photo uploaded?
Yes. Erasing an object and filling in behind it needs a model that cannot run in a browser, so the photo goes to a processing provider for that one job and is not stored afterwards.
How big an object can it handle?
Small and medium objects fill in convincingly. A very large area is invention rather than removal — the result will be plausible, but the model is composing a background rather than recovering one.
