What makes an AI photo look like the 80s

A sepia filter isn't enough. The photos in the trend that actually fool people get the photography right, not just the haircut. These six things are what the tool asks for:

  • Direct on-camera flash

    Hard light, a bright face and a shadow on the wall behind you. Most fakes skip it and end up looking like a filter.

  • Film grain and faded colour

    Consumer 35mm stock: a little warm, a little soft, never razor sharp.

  • The date stamp

    The orange digits film cameras printed in the corner of the frame. It does more for the look than any hairstyle.

  • Period styling

    Hair, clothes and accessories redone in mid-80s fashion. Volume, shoulders, colours that don't apologise.

  • Nothing modern

People upload a current selfie and ask an image model to show them as they'd have looked in a photo taken around 1985: period hair and clothes, analogue grain, direct flash and an orange date stamp. It spread through Instagram posts, Reels and X, helped along by an example prompt OpenAI shared. This page does the same job without the prompt.

Is the 80s AI photo generator free?

Your first 3 photos are free once you create an account with Google or email. Guest sessions don't get them. After that, each photo costs 2 credits ($0.20), paid from credits that never expire. There's no subscription.

Why do I need an account for the free ones?

Each photo costs us real money to make, and counting per account is the only way "3 free" stays at 3. If we counted per browser, anyone with a private window would get unlimited photos.

Will it still look like me?

That's the instruction: keep your face, features, skin tone and age, and change everything around them. If the result looks like a stranger, the tool got it wrong, so try another photo. A clear, front-facing shot gives it the best chance.

What photo works best?

A well-lit photo with your face unobstructed and roughly facing the camera. A plain selfie beats a group shot. Sunglasses and heavy shadow make your likeness harder to keep. Your outfit doesn't matter, because the model replaces it on purpose.

Is my photo stored?

It goes to our processing provider, fal, for that one job, and we don't keep it afterwards. There's no copy and no record of the image. What we do record is that your account used one of its free photos, or the credits the photo cost, because that's how the allowance is counted. What fal keeps is covered by their own privacy policy.

Can I pick a different decade?

Not here. This one is 1985 on purpose, because that's the trend. For anything else, the AI image generator makes images from a written prompt.
