How to make WordArt online

  1. Step 1

    Type your words

Up to 40 characters: a name, a title, a birthday message, a joke for the group chat.

  2. Step 2

    Pick a style

Rainbow, Arch, 3D block, Chrome, Wave, Perspective, Pop shadow or Outline. The preview redraws as you click.

  3. Step 3

    Choose a font

Heavy sans for the true 90s look, Serif for something grander, Rounded for something friendlier.

  4. Step 4

    Download the PNG

It saves with a transparent background, trimmed to the letters, so it drops onto a slide, a doc or a photo without a white box round it.

WordArt started in 1991 as an intern project at Microsoft, and spent the next decade on every school poster, church newsletter and lost-cat flyer in the world. The gallery that shipped with it was a grid of pre-made looks, and those are what people mean when they search for an old WordArt generator: the rainbow, the arch, the one that gets bigger as it goes.

Word still has WordArt, just a calmer version: shadows, glows and reflections in place of the loud presets. And per Microsoft's own help page, Word for the web can't add new WordArt at all. A PNG has no such problem. It goes into Google Docs, Canva, a slide, a group chat, or on top of a photo in any editor. Pair it with a photo collage for a party invite, or a pencil portrait from the photo to sketch tool for a homemade card.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make WordArt online for free?

Type your words above, pick a style and a font, and press Download PNG. It's drawn in your browser, so there's no watermark and no limit on how many you make. You need a free Leaxor account to use the tool.

Is this the old Microsoft WordArt?

No. WordArt is Microsoft's feature, and this page isn't affiliated with Microsoft. It recreates the look people remember from 90s Word documents (rainbow fills, arches, chunky 3D letters) as a picture you can use anywhere, including places Word can't reach.

Can I still use WordArt in Microsoft Word?

Yes, in the desktop app: Insert, then WordArt, then pick a style. Microsoft notes that Word for the web can show WordArt that's already in a document but can't add new WordArt, which is one reason people come looking for an online generator.

How do I put word art in Google Docs or iMessage?

Download the PNG, then add it like any picture: Insert, Image in Google Docs, or the photo button in iMessage. The background is transparent, so on a white page it looks typed in rather than pasted.

What's the difference between word art and a word cloud?

Word art is one phrase drawn with effects: colour, curves, shadows. A word cloud is many words packed into a shape, sized by how often each appears. This page makes word art. WordArt.com, despite the name, makes word clouds.

Is there an AI word art generator?

AI image models can draw lettering from a description, like 'the word SUMMER in melting ice cream letters'. They can do textures no preset can, but spelling isn't guaranteed and every try costs a little. For exact words in a classic style, a generator like this is faster and always spells it right.

Why does my font look different on another phone?

The styles use fonts already on your device, such as Arial Black or Georgia. When one is missing, the browser picks the closest one it has. The PNG you download keeps whatever you saw in the preview.

Can I use the word art I make commercially?

The image you download is yours to use. The effects are drawn by the page; the letter shapes come from fonts on your device, and big commercial print runs are the one case where it's worth checking that font's licence.
