On Windows
- 1. Install the free HEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. Without it, Windows cannot open HEIC at all.
- 2. Open the photo in the Photos app.
- 3. Choose Save asand pick HEIC to PNG's target format from the list.
Windows 10 and 11. For a whole folder at once, the tool above is quicker than repeating this per file.
On a Mac
- 1. Double-click the photo so it opens in Preview.
- 2. Choose File → Export.
- 3. Set the Format dropdown, then save.
Nothing to install — macOS reads HEIC natively. Select several files first and Preview will convert them together.
On the iPhone itself
To stop the problem happening again, open Settings → Camera → Formats and pick Most Compatible. The camera saves JPG from then on. It uses more storage and does not change photos you have already taken.
HEIC decoding uses libheif, licensed under the LGPL-3.0. It is loaded into your browser as a separate WebAssembly module and runs on your device.
Frequently asked questions
What is HEIC, and why won't my photos open?
HEIC is the format iPhones have saved photos in since iOS 11. It fits the same picture into roughly half the space of a JPG, which is why Apple adopted it — but support outside Apple's software is patchy, so Windows, older viewers and many upload forms simply refuse it.
Should I pick PNG or JPG?
PNG is lossless: converting to it discards nothing, and it is the right choice if the image is going into design work or will be edited again. It is also several times larger. If you just want a photo that opens and shares, JPG is the better trade.
Does this work on Live Photos?
Yes. The still image is extracted and converted; the short video a Live Photo carries alongside it is discarded, since the photograph is what you came for.
Are my photos uploaded?
No. Everything happens in your browser on your own device. The decoder comes down to you; your photo does not go up to us.
Can I stop my iPhone making HEIC files?
Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible switches the camera to JPG. It costs storage space and only applies to photos taken afterwards.
Why did a very large photo take a moment?
The newest iPhone sensors make big files and the decoding runs locally rather than on a server. That is the trade for nothing being uploaded — and for there being no daily limit.
