Flux 2 Pro is my default model. Not one of seven options buried in a picker, the one that loads when you open the page, and it costs a single credit — ten cents an image. So this is a strange comparison page to write, because I am not arguing against Flux. I am a customer of it, at the same rates anyone else pays. Disclosure: Leaxor is mine. On 20 August I benchmarked it against five other models, twice each, running one 16:9 thumbnail prompt with the words "I TRIED 7 AI MODELS" burned into it. Flux 2 Pro was the most-sampled model in that run, at four successful generations, and returned a median 12.8 seconds. It was also the cheapest thing tested that was not HiDream, and it beat a model costing six times as much by half the wall-clock time. The useful question is not whether Flux is good. It is what you want wrapped around it.

What Flux Is Actually Built For

Being a very good open-weight image model family. Black Forest Labs ships models, not products, and Flux has been near the top of the field on prompt adherence and photorealism since it landed.

Because it is weights rather than an app, "using Flux" means one of several different things and they have very different costs. You can run it locally if you have the hardware. You can call it through an inference platform and pay per generation. You can use it inside somebody's product, which is what my users are doing whether or not they notice. There is also an official API from Black Forest Labs themselves. Each of those is a real option and none of them is the same purchase.

The measurement I have is on the third path. On 20 August, four successful runs of Flux 2 Pro through the same 16:9 prompt returned a median 12.8 seconds. That is the most data I have on any single model in the roster, because the two runs that failed elsewhere in the sweep did not touch it. The output files sit next to the results, so the claim is checkable rather than asserted.

What Flux does not have is anything around it. No ratio presets, no style handling, no credit balance, no history, no thumbnail flow. That is not a criticism of a model, it is a description of what a model is.

The Gap: Weights vs a Product

A model produces pixels from a tensor. Everything between that and a thumbnail in a folder is somebody's code. The only question is whose.

Where Flux sits in the roster

It is the default because it is fast, cheap and right most of the time. It is not the answer to everything, and the table makes that clearer than an argument would. Prices at ten cents a credit, medians from the 20 August run:

Two things in that table are worth more than the rest. Nano Banana Pro costs six times what Flux 2 Pro does and took twice as long, so price is not buying throughput anywhere in this roster. And Imagen 4 Ultra says "not measured" because the upstream account ran out of balance before it generated anything on the day, which I would rather leave visible than quietly fill in.

Thumbnails

Flux is strong here and it is what I use for most thumbnails that do not have words in them. When they do, Ideogram v3 takes over, because typography inside an image is a different technical problem and no amount of prompt care makes a photoreal model spell reliably. The thumbnail flow switches between them per image.

Cost

If you call Flux directly through an inference platform, you will pay less than ten cents. That is arithmetic rather than opinion: my price includes the upstream rate plus a margin. The pricing page is honest about what that buys, and if you can write an HTTP request it may buy you nothing you need.

When Using Flux Directly Is the Right Choice

  • You own the hardware. Open weights on your own GPU has a marginal cost of zero and nothing beats that at volume.
  • You can write code. Calling an inference endpoint costs less than any wrapper over it, necessarily.
  • You want parameters I have fixed. Guidance, steps, resolution beyond the four ratios I expose.
  • You only ever want Flux. If one model covers your work, a seven-model picker is paying for six things you will not touch.

Migrating to a Wrapped Flux

What transfers

Everything about your prompts, and this is more literally true here than on any other page in this set. It is the same model. The same weights, reached through the same kind of endpoint, responding to the same descriptive vocabulary. A prompt that worked in your local ComfyUI graph produces a comparable image here, because nothing about the generation has changed. What changes is only what surrounds it.

Your instinct for when Flux is the right tool transfers too, and it stays useful in a different way: instead of it being the only model, it becomes the default you deviate from. That is a small shift with a real effect on output quality, because the deviations are where the wins are.

What changes

Three things. You stop configuring, which is a relief or a loss depending on temperament. You start paying a margin over the raw inference rate, and I would rather you know that number is real than discover it later. And you gain six other models sitting next to the one you came for, which is the actual argument for the wrapper: not that Flux is insufficient, but that Ideogram spells and Recraft does vector work and neither of those is a thing Flux is going to become.

The style presets are the other quiet change. Each applies a full descriptor block and a matching negative prompt rather than appending a style word, so a chunk of the prompt engineering you were doing by hand now happens centrally. That is worth less to someone who enjoys prompt craft and quite a lot to someone who wants a photoreal image on the first attempt rather than the third.

Your first week

  1. Days 1 to 2. Run three prompts you already trust through Flux 2 Pro here. Same model, so you are testing the interface rather than the output, and it should feel familiar within about ten minutes.
  2. Days 3 to 4. Take a thumbnail that needs words in it and run it through Ideogram v3 at thirty cents. This is the specific thing Flux will not do well, and it is the clearest demonstration of why a roster beats a favourite.
  3. Days 5 to 7. Try Recraft v4 on something flat and graphic. At 8.9 seconds median it is the fastest model in the set, and if your channel uses any diagram or explainer imagery it will change how you make it.

Keep your local Flux setup if you have one. Nothing here replaces owning the weights, and the two coexist fine.

The Verdict

This is not really a versus. Flux 2 Pro is the default model here at ten cents an image, and if you can run the weights locally or call an endpoint yourself, doing that is cheaper and gives you parameters I have fixed. Take that path if it is open to you. The argument for the wrapper is what sits beside Flux rather than instead of it: Ideogram v3 when the thumbnail has words in it, Recraft v4 at 8.9 seconds for flat graphic work, presets instead of resolution parameters, and a balance rather than an API key. You are not choosing between models. You are choosing whether to assemble the rest yourself.

How fast is Flux 2 Pro?+

A median 12.8 seconds across four successful runs on 20 August 2026, generating the same 16:9 thumbnail prompt. That made it the most-sampled model in the benchmark. For comparison within the same run, Recraft v4 managed 8.9 seconds and Nano Banana Pro took 25.6.

Is Flux good for YouTube thumbnails?+

For thumbnails without text in them, yes, and it is what I reach for by default. When the image needs readable words baked in, Ideogram v3 at thirty cents is the better tool, because typography inside an image is a separate technical problem that photoreal models handle badly.

Does paying more get a better model?+

Not straightforwardly. In the 20 August run, Nano Banana Pro at 6 credits was both the most expensive and the slowest at a median 25.6 seconds, while Flux 2 Pro at 1 credit returned 12.8. Price reflects what a model costs to run and what it specialises in, not a quality ladder.

Can I run Flux locally instead?+

Yes, and if you own a capable GPU that is the cheapest option available, with full parameter control and complete privacy. The weights are open. A hosted picker is worth paying for only when the setup and maintenance are the obstacle rather than the cost.
