I used Grok Imagine through an X Premium subscription, and I ran into all four of the usual walls: usage limits, characters that didn't stay the same person from one generation to the next, not enough control over the output, and refusals on prompts I didn't think were a problem. None of that makes it bad. It's a fast, fun generator bundled with a chatbot you might already pay for. Quick flag: I built Leaxor, so read what follows with that in mind. What Grok Imagine Actually Is
xAI's image and video generator, living inside the Grok app and on X. It has been rebuilt more than once. In October 2024 TechCrunch described Black Forest Labs, the company behind Flux, as the startup behind Grok's image generator. On 9 December 2024 xAI announced its own model, code-named Aurora. Today it ships as Grok Imagine, for stills and video.
Access comes through a subscription. When I checked grok.com/plans on 18 September 2026, SuperGrok listed "HD 720p, 30-second video", SuperGrok Plus added 1080p video and "significantly higher usage across Chat, Imagine, Voice & Build", and the top tier included X Premium+. The "usage across Chat, Imagine, Voice & Build" line is the one to notice. Your images come out of the same allowance as your chats.
Where It Fell Short for Me
Limits. I hit them. When image generation shares a pool with everything else Grok does, a heavy afternoon of iterating on one thumbnail eats the same budget as your questions.
Consistency. This was the one that mattered for my work. Ask for the same character twice and you get two people who look related. For a single image that's fine. For a channel that needs the same face in every video, it's the whole problem.
Control and refusals. One model family, and not much to steer it with. And some prompts I'd call harmless came back refused. That happens on every platform, mine included, but it's more frustrating when you can't switch to another model and try again.
The Gap: One Model vs a Shelf
Leaxor puts ten image models behind one prompt box: Flux 2 Pro, Nano Banana 2 and Pro, Seedream 4.5 and 5.0 Pro, Imagen 4 Ultra, Recraft v4, Ideogram v3 and v4, and HiDream. When one model gets a face or a word wrong, you switch and run the same prompt again. Ideogram handles text inside images. Recraft handles flat illustration. That's the control I missed.
Pricing is per output instead of per month. Images cost 1 to 3 credits, so $0.10 to $0.30, from a balance that never expires. There's no pool to drain.
For video, Leaxor's video mode takes a topic, writes the script, draws the characters once and keeps them consistent across every scene, then animates them and adds narration and captions. A finished 9:16 video costs 15, 30 or 90 credits. That's the mode I built because of the consistency problem above.
Other Grok Imagine Alternatives Worth a Look

- Midjourney for a distinctive house style, if you don't mind a subscription.
- Gemini if you want Nano Banana with a chatbot attached, the closest like-for-like swap for Grok.

- Kling if video clips are the main job.
When Grok Imagine Is the Right Choice
- You already pay for X Premium or SuperGrok and generate now and then. It's effectively free at that point.
- You want chat and images in one place, and you want to post straight to X.
- You're a developer. xAI's API lists Grok Imagine images from $0.02 each, which undercuts my $0.10 by a lot.

Grok Imagine is a good deal if you already pay for X and generate now and then; it's quick and it's there. It stopped working for me on the jobs that need the same face every time, a lot of iterations in one sitting, or a second model to try when the first gets it wrong. Those are the three things Leaxor is built around. Developers should look at xAI's API before either, because at $0.02 an image it's the cheapest option here.

Is Grok Imagine free or paid?+
It sits behind a subscription. I used it through X Premium, and on 18 September 2026 grok.com/plans listed image and video generation under the SuperGrok tiers. Check that page for what free accounts currently get, because xAI changes it often. Developers can also pay per image through the xAI API, from $0.02.
Does Grok use Flux for image generation?+
