Start from a tattoo style
Tattoo styles, and the words that get them
Name the style and the model has a target. These are the words that do the most work for each one; every starter above is built from them, and you can edit any of it before you send.
| Style | What it looks like | Put in the prompt |
|---|---|---|
| Fine line | Thin, single-needle lines, little or no shading | “fine-line”, “single-needle”, “minimal shading” |
| American traditional | Bold outlines, a few solid colours, simple shapes | “bold black outlines”, “solid red and yellow fills” |
| Blackwork | Solid black areas, dotwork, high contrast | “solid black fills”, “dotwork shading” |
| Japanese (irezumi) | Koi, dragons, waves and flowers in big flowing pieces | “irezumi”, “waves and wind bars”, “bold outlines” |
| Geometric | Shapes, symmetry and straight lines | “built from triangles”, “symmetrical”, “thin lines” |
| Watercolour | Soft colour washes that run past the lines | “watercolour splashes”, “thin black outlines” |
How to write a tattoo prompt that prints
A tattoo design is flash, not a photo of a tattoo. Ask for the design on its own, on plain white, with “no skin”. Otherwise the model draws an arm, the lighting of a studio, and a design you can't lift off the picture. That's why every starter ends with the same phrase.
Then give it three things: the subject (“a moth with a crescent moon”), the style (“fine line”) and the ink (“black only”, or the colours you want). Placement helps the shape: “a long vertical piece for the forearm” gets you something taller than “a small piece for the wrist”.
Run the same prompt on two or three models. Line-heavy designs suit Recraft v4, which our picker lists for illustration & vector; painterly ones suit the photoreal models. Each costs what its model costs, $0.10 at the cheapest. The AI image generator page lists every model and its price.
Planning a family crest tattoo? Build the crest first with the family crest creator, which keeps the colours legible by heraldry's own rule, then give the design to your artist.
From a photo, and on your body
From a photo.A pet, a parent's handwriting, a place. Upload it to AI image to image and ask for it as tattoo linework on white. The shapes stay; the drawing changes. That's 1 credit an edit. For an outline to trace rather than a finished design, the free photo to sketchtool's line drawing style does it on your device.
On your body. In Image mode, attach a photo of the spot and the design as reference photos, then ask for the design on the skin there, at the size you want. Seedream 4.5 (1 credit) and Nano Banana 2 (2 credits) don't charge extra for the reference photos. It's a mock-up for size and placement, not a promise of how healed ink looks.
Before it goes on skin
An AI design is a starting point for your artist, not a stencil. They'll thicken lines that would blur, open up details that would close as the tattoo ages, and size it for where it's going. Bring two or three versions; it gives them something to work from.
Check any lettering letter by letter. And take your time choosing: the FDA's tattoo safety guide notes that removal usually takes several treatments and real expense. On ownership, the US Copyright Office's AI guidance is the plain-language place to start, and Leaxor's terms cover what you can do with what you make.
AI tattoo generator FAQ
Is there a free AI tattoo generator?
Not on Leaxor: there's no free tier or free credits. A tattoo design costs from $0.10 depending on the model, credits never expire, and no subscription is required. Most designs take a few tries, so expect to spend the price of several images, not one.
Can I make a tattoo design from a photo?
Yes. Upload the photo to the AI image to image tool and ask for it as tattoo art, for example "turn my dog into a fine-line tattoo, black ink on white, no background". It keeps the shape of the photo and redraws it as linework, for 1 credit an edit.
Can I see what a tattoo will look like on my body?
Yes, roughly. In Image mode, attach a photo of the spot (a forearm, a shoulder) and the design as reference photos, then ask for the design placed on the skin there. Seedream 4.5 and Nano Banana 2 don't charge extra for reference photos. Treat it as a mock-up for size and placement: real ink sits in skin differently.
Can an AI tattoo generator do lettering and names?
It can, but check every letter. Image models still misspell, and a typo on skin is permanent. Ask for the exact words in quotes, keep it short, and if the spelling or the script matters, take the words to your artist and let them letter it by hand.
Will a tattoo artist use an AI design?
Many will use it as a reference, the same way they'd use a photo or a sketch. Expect them to redraw it: an artist adjusts line weight, size and spacing for skin, and for how the tattoo will look in ten years. Ask before the appointment; some studios only tattoo their own designs.
Who owns an AI-generated tattoo design?
The rules are still being settled. The US Copyright Office's position is that material generated by AI without enough human authorship can't be registered for copyright. The design is yours to use, but you may not be able to stop someone else using a similar one.
What is the best AI tattoo generator?
The one that gives you clean, printable linework in the style you want. On Leaxor you can try the same prompt on forty-seven image models and keep the best. Recraft v4, which our picker lists for "illustration & vector", is a good first pick for line-heavy flash.
