Short version: Photoroom is a background remover that grew into a product-photography studio. Subscriptions are sorted by monthly AI credits and export counts across Pro, Max and Ultra. The API is a separate bill: about $0.02 an image to remove a background, about $0.10 an image for full editing. It is an editor, not a generator, and that distinction decides whether it belongs in your stack.

What Photoroom is for

Someone has a photograph of a thing and needs that thing on a different background. That is the entire premise, and it turns out to be an enormous market.

Marketplace sellers photograph products on a kitchen table and need them on clean white. Brands need the same bottle staged in twelve different scenes without twelve shoots. Resellers need a hundred listings to look like they came from the same studio.

Photoroom does the cutout well, which is the hard part. Hair, glass, fine edges and semi-transparency are where background removal usually falls apart, and this is a company that has spent years on precisely that problem rather than on prompt handling.

On top of the cutout sit generated backgrounds, AI shadows, batch processing, brand templates and AI fashion models. Higher tiers add video generation and 4K.

Photoroom pricing, and the two bills

The consumer plans separate by allowance rather than by feature, mostly.

PlanAI credits/moExports/moAdds
Pro8,0001,000Core tools, AI backgrounds, AI fashion models
Max25,0003,000Video generator
Ultra75,00010,0004K image and video
EnterpriseCustomCustomAdjustable AI shadows, visual QA, SSO, SLA

The Photoroom pricing page presents these relative to each other and bills annually by default, so read the billing toggle carefully before assuming a monthly figure.

The API is where the numbers get concrete, and it is worth being explicit that API usage is billed completely separately from Pro, Max and Ultra. A subscription does not include API calls. People discover this after wiring something up.

Per Photoroom's API pricing, the Basic plan is around $20/month plus roughly $0.02 per image for Remove Background, and the Plus plan around $100/month plus roughly $0.10 per image for the fuller Image Editing API. Photoroom cut Remove Background pricing by about 90%, so any figure you find in an older comparison is likely to be wildly high.

At two cents an image, background removal at scale is close to a solved cost problem. Ten thousand product images is $200 of processing plus the plan.

Editor, not generator

This is the distinction that decides whether Photoroom is useful to you, and the marketing language across the whole category has made it muddier than it should be.

A generator invents an image from a description. You type "a ceramic mug on a marble counter" and it produces one, mug included.

Photoroom needs your mug. It will isolate it beautifully and stage it on marble convincingly, but the subject has to exist and you have to have photographed it. Everything AI does here happens around something real.

For e-commerce that is the correct design. Your listing has to show your actual product, and a generated approximation of it is somewhere between useless and fraudulent. For a creator with no product and no camera, it is the wrong tool entirely, however good it is.

Aragon AI sits in the same family and is worth knowing about if the subject is a person rather than a product: you supply the selfies, it supplies everything around them, and it charges once instead of monthly.

Where it fits for creators

Thumbnails, partially. Cutting a person or object out of a photo and compositing it onto a high-contrast background is a real thumbnail workflow and Photoroom is better at the cutout step than any general generator. What it will not do is design the layout, set the type, or produce the background scene from an idea rather than a preset.

So it lands as one step in a chain rather than the chain. That is fine, provided you are not paying a subscription for one step you use twice a month. The thumbnail guide covers where the other steps come from.

Quick flag: Leaxor is mine, so here is the honest boundary. Leaxor generates images from prompts rather than editing photographs: seven models, style presets, selectable aspect ratios including a 1344×768 thumbnail size, priced per image at 1 to 3 credits with credits at $0.10 and no expiry. It has no background remover and no cutout tooling, so if your job starts with a photograph of a real object, Photoroom does something I simply do not do. If your job starts with an idea and no camera, generating the image is the shorter path.

Plenty of people need both, and the two do not overlap enough to argue about. The generator comparison covers the other half.

Verdict

Buy it if you photograph products, at any volume. The cutout quality is the reason to be here and the $0.02 API rate makes bulk work genuinely cheap.

Skip it if you do not own a camera or a product. No amount of generated background helps when there is no subject to place on it.

Frequently asked questions

What is Photoroom?+

Photoroom is an AI photo editor built around product imagery. Its core job is cutting a subject out of its background cleanly, then placing it on a new one — a plain colour, a generated scene, a studio setup. It is used heavily by e-commerce sellers and marketplaces rather than by people generating pictures from scratch.

How much does Photoroom cost?+

Consumer subscriptions come in Pro, Max and Ultra tiers, separated by monthly AI credits and export limits: roughly 8,000 credits and 1,000 exports on Pro, 25,000 and 3,000 on Max, and 75,000 and 10,000 on Ultra. Video generation appears at Max, and 4K resolution at Ultra. Enterprise is quoted separately.

How much does the Photoroom API cost?+

The API is billed separately from any subscription. The Remove Background API runs about $0.02 per image on a plan starting around $20/month, and the fuller Image Editing API runs about $0.10 per image starting around $100/month. Photoroom cut Remove Background pricing by roughly 90%, which is why older figures look very different.

Is Photoroom free?+

There is a free entry point to the app, and on the API side you get a monthly sandbox allowance on Image Editing plus around 10 free production calls on Remove Background when you create an account. That is enough to check quality against your own photographs, which is the only meaningful test.

Is Photoroom an AI image generator?+

Not primarily. It generates backgrounds and scenes around a subject you supply, but it is an editor at heart — the subject comes from your camera. If you want an image created from a text prompt with no source photograph, a generator is the right category and Photoroom is not.

Is Photoroom good for YouTube thumbnails?+

It is good at one part of the job. Cutting yourself or an object out cleanly and dropping it on a bold background is exactly what it does, and it does it better than a general generator. It will not write the text, design the layout, or invent a scene from nothing, so it tends to sit alongside other tools rather than replace them.
